River Exe Cruise from Exeter Quay to Exmouth

July 10th, 2023 1:45pm Outing

Exeter Quay, Devon

The coach will drop us at Exeter Quay where there are a variety of eating places where you can sit overlooking the river for lunch, or even take the little passenger ferry to the other side of the river for more raft shops and cafes.

At 1.45pm we ill board our boat, with the crea waiting to welcome us aboard the help anyone who needs assistance.  There is a fully licenced bar serving a range of local ales and gin, hot and cold refreshments and snacks.  It is exceptionally clean and well maintained and thee are toilets on board.

The cruise is the best way to see the stunning scenery, birds, wildlife and nature of the Exe Estuary and its surroundings.  It only takes place on limited occasions when the tides are suitable.  During the trip our Captain will give us informative and enjoyable commentary, ensuring that you get to see everything.

Departing from the Quay, we pass down the Exeter Ship Canal, first constructed in the 1560s predating the ‘canal mania’ period and one of the oldest artificial waterways in the UK. Some distance down the canal we hold up the traffic and wait whilst the Countess Wear Swing Bridge across the A379 is lifted for us to pass through and enter the tranquil waters at the mouth of the river at Topsham. There may be an opportunity to see wetland birds, or even a seal. We pass Lympstone Training camp on our left and Powderham Castle on our right before arriving at Exmouth Marina where our coach will meet us at approx 16:30 for the return journey.

Cost and pick-up times are in the January 2023 newsletter.  Fully Booked.
